Configuring a Windows 3.x computer
The following pages will walk you step-by-step through manually configuring your Windows 3.x computer to connect to our service, provided you have already installed the necessary components.
If you have the CoreComm Internet software on CD, or have downloaded it, then these instructions do not apply to you.
The floppy disks we send out to customers with Windows 3.1 contain Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.02a with Internet Mail and News, and the Shiva PPP dialer to establish a connection.
To begin installation from our floppy (3.5" disks), insert disk one of four (1 of 4) into the computer. Then, open the Program Manager, and from the File menu, choose Run. Enter in "a:\setup.exe" (as shown below) and press enter. You do not need to do this if you have already installed the disks.

After installation, follow these steps:
Step 1 - Getting to the Dialer
After you've completed the installation process, double-click on Internet Explorer. You'll be guided through a page or two of general information and/or options the first time you do this, and then you will get to the dialer.
The dialer will look like this:

If the dialer is blank, then you need to configure it to dial up.
Step 2 - Configuring the dialer
Click on the Properties button. You will get a dialog box that asks you for general information about setting up your connection. All you need to enter in here is the phone number you wish to dial. The remaining options need not be changed.

Step 3 - Checking the modem properties
Go to the Modem tab at the top of the properties dialog. This will bring you to the modem properties tab. You probably do not need to change anything here unless you know for sure that something is misconfigured. The screen will look something like this:

Step 4 - Checking the TCP/IP settings
Now, go to the TCP/IP Settings tab in the Connection Properties dialog. The server should be assigning the IP address, while the DNS numbers should be specified:
 | Primary DNS: | 209.153.128.4
|
 | Secondary DNS: | 169.207.1.3
|
Enter the DNS numbers where indicated:

When finished, click OK.
Step 5 - Dialing In
Now, it's time to get connected. Once back at the Connect To screen, simply enter your username and password (make sure you're using the correct capitalization - usually all lower case), review the phone number to make sure it will be accurately dialed.
Once you're sure the settings on your screen are correct, you may click the Connect button to sign on.

Troubleshooting...
• If you receive an error message explaining that access is denied or the username or password were rejected, you would simply need to double-check how you entered in your username and password and then try again. If you're still having trouble, contact customer support for help.
• If the phone number being dialed looks incorrect, make sure the dialing properties are correctly configured. To do this, click the Dial Settings button, and review the information shown.
If, for example, you were in area code 773 and dialing from a regular residential phone line without call waiting, and dialing a 312 area code number, you would likely have a screen like this:

Please note that this screen shown here may not necessarily reflect the settings you might enter, but should give you an idea of what to fill in.
