Netscape Messenger 4.5+
This document will help you configure Netscape Messenger 4.5+ to manage your E-Mail account. Note: These instructions are not for Netscape 6.x or Netscape 7.x. In addition, this version of Netscape for Macintosh will not work with your E-mail account. To check your version of Netscape, click on the Help menu at the top, and select About Netscape. The version number will appear on the new window. To locate and download later versions of Netscape go to http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/.

Step 1
Open Netscape Messenger. This can be done by opening your Start Menu, pointing to Programs, pointing to the Netscape Communicator folder, and selecting Netscape Messenger.

Step 2
From the Edit menu, select Preferences.

Step 3
On the Preferences dialog that comes up, go to the Identity category as shown below. Sometimes you will need to click the "+" beside Mail & Newsgroups in order to see the Identity category. Fill in Your Name as you'd like it to appear on messages you send out.

Enter your E-mail address. (Ex. username@core.com, username@voyager.net, etc…)

The remainder of the information is optional and does not need to be entered.

Step 4
Now, go to the Mail Servers category and fill in the following information:
Your outgoing mail server is authmail.core.com
Enter your E-mail address. (Ex. username@core.com, username@voyager.net, etc…)

In the area on this screen where you see Incoming Mail Servers , it should be blank if you have never configured this program to retrieve E-Mail. If it is not blank, highlight the server that is typed in there by clicking on it with your mouse. Now, click on delete to the right to remove it.

Step 5
With the Incoming Mail Servers section empty, click the Add button to add a server to the list. A dialog box will pop up.

Fill in the necessary information indicated in the table below.
Your Incoming Mail Server is dependant upon your E-mail address. If you already know your incoming mail server, type it in where indicated below. If you are not sure what your Incoming Mail Server is, please click here before continuing.

Fig. 4: Incoming mail server properties

Also, make sure the following information is in place:

Server Type: For your incoming E-mail, this is a POP3 Server. If it does not say POP3 Server in the pull down menu, click on the arrow to the right and select POP3 Server.

User Name: Please put the username you use to identify yourself with our service. Your User Name is the first part of your E-mail address (everything before the @ symbol). This should be typed in all lowercase.

If you like, you can tell Netscape to remember your password. By doing this, Netscape will not prompt you for a password to download your messages from the server. This way, when you open Messenger, it will download your new messages without requiring any steps to be taken by you. This does not affect the performance of the program and is simply a matter of preference.

Click OK to return to the normal Preferences dialog box.

Step 6
Click OK to save your information and finish setting up your mail account.

Congratulations! You have successfully completed setting up your E-Mail to work in Netscape Messenger 4.5.

Helpful Pointers for using Netscape Mail:

  • By default, Netscape Communicator will open to the Navigator browser. To go into Netscape Mail to check, read, and write mail, simply select Messenger Inbox from the Communicator menu.
  • If the option to check for new messages every xx minutes has been set (see Step 5 above), Netscape Messenger will automatically check for new messages periodically while the program is open and you are connected to our service. If at any given time you want to force the software to check for messages immediately, simply click the Get Mail button from the mail window.
  • After setting up Netscape, it is often helpful to close the program and then restart it.
