Troubleshooting Lock Ups and Crashes in Netscape on a Macintosh

Crashes and Lock-ups on any computer is an unfortunate fact of life. Macintosh is no different. The most common types of error you will get on a Macintosh are type 11 and type 1. They're basically caused by improper RAM handling, extension conflicts, preferences errors, or other deeper, system wide errors. Here's the official word from Apple on Type 11 errors.

A Type 11 error is listed as a hardware exception error. However, As with all Macintosh Type xx errors, they usually do not identify a particular software or hardware component error. Type xx errors are more general in nature.

You may see more Type 11 errors on a Power Macintosh computer because of problems with the software-based 68k emulator. The emulator allows the RISC processor to run older Macintosh software. If the emulator gets corrupted while loading into RAM, then some of the failures caused by this are reported as Type 11 or Hardware Exception errors. The emulator can get corrupted by either incompatible software or faulty hardware.

This document is meant to help you troubleshoot type 11, type 1, and other errors that may be causing netscape to crash. Sometimes crashes can be fixed simply from within the program. Other solutions can be more obscure. We're going to cover information from Netscape and getting rid of the Type 11 errors caused by Netscape, and we're also going to give you the information that Apple provides for clearing up chronic system crashes.

Troubleshooting Lock-Ups and Crashes
Quick Fixes
  1. Clear Netscape's Disk Cache (if Netscape still runs).
    From within Netscape, click on the "Options" menu and choose "Network Preferences". Click on the "Cache" tab. Click on "Clear Disk Cache Now".
  2. Increase Netscape's buffer size & decrease the maximum number of connections. From within Netscape, go to the "Options" menu and select "Network Preferences". Click on the "Connections" tab and decrease the maximum number of connections. Increase the buffer size as large as possible.
  3. Give Netscape more memory.
    Find the Netscape Navigator icon on the hard drive and click on it ONCE. Go under the "File" menu and choose "Get Info". If you have enough memory on your Macintosh, increase the Preferred size by a few thousand.

More Advanced Solutions
If problems persist follow these "Basics"

  1. Trash the Netscape Preferences.
    Go into the System Folder->Preferences->Netscape folder and drag the Global History and Netscape Preferences files to the trash. Go into the "Cache f" folder and drag ALL these icons to the Trash. If you use Netscape to send and receive E-Mail you'll need to reenter all the information into Netscape so that you can continue to send/receive E-Mail, but this may also remedy the crashes.
  2. Disable the Netscape Plug-ins.
    Go into the Netscape directory on your hard drive. Open the "Plug-ins" folder. Drag everything EXCEPT the "Default Plug-in" out of this folder and to the Desktop. This will disable all your plug-ins, one of which may be causing you a problem.
  3. Extensions & Control Panel Troubleshooting.
    Go under the Apple menu to the Control Panels and open the Extensions Manager. Since too many Extensions & Control Panels can cause conflicts and crashes, you're going to want to disable as many as you can... even if it's only temporary.
  4. Zap the PRAM.
    Reboot the machine, then immediately hold down the "option", "Apple", "P", and "R". Hold them until you hear the restart chime three times, then let go and allow it to continue restarting normally.
  5. Rebuild the Desktop.
    Do this by restarting and holding down the "option" and "Apple" keys through the restart process. Once the machine is back up, it will ask you if you want to rebuild the Desktop. Click "Ok".
  6. Check out your hard drive.
    If you have purchased either MacTools Pro or Norton Disk Doctor, run a check on your hard drive. If you don't have either of these, it would be a good idea to run the "Disk First Aid" program which can usually be found on your System CD-ROM or your Utilities floppy disk.
  7. Make sure you have the latest version of either MacTCP or TCP/IP That will run on your system. The latest MacTCP is currently 2.0.6. TCP/IP is currently at 2.0.1.
  8. Turn Virtual Memory off.
    Type 11 errors are often seen when Virtual Memory is on. Go to your Control Panel and make sure the Virtual Memory is off. If you are using either RamDoubler or OptiMem, make sure they are disabled.

Type 11 and Type 1 errors can be very common when using Netscape. Because of that, Netscape has outlined some troubleshooting measures.

    1. Conflict Test

      Errors on a Mac can often be traced to conflicts between Control Panels and Extensions. Thus, if you disable all but the bare-minimum necessary to run Netscape, you've eliminated many variables that could affect the Mac.

      1. System 7.5 and 8.x comes with the Extensions Manager Control Panel. Go to the Apple menu, select Control Panels, and open Extensions Manager.
      2. In the top-right corner of the window is the Set-list. Choose Save Set and name it "Before Netscape". (If you ever need to return to your old configuration, open the "Before Netscape" set.)
      3. Turn off any extensions that you do not need for the Internet. Go back to the Set-list popup menu and select Save Set. Name it "Minimal".
      4. Restart the computer to put your changes into effect.

        Note: There are other Extensions Manager utilities out there. Conflict Catcher and Now Startup are probably the most popular. If you have one of those, make sure anything with "TCP", "PPP", and "Open" (as in Open Transport) is turned on. If you have any questions about it, check out your manual.

      5. Give Netscape more memory

        Netscape on the PC has both a disk cache and a memory cache in the Network Preferences, but Netscape on the Mac has only a Disk Cache setting. To find the Memory Cache:

        1. Make sure Netscape is not running. To do this, go to the Applications Menu in the top-right corner of the screen and make sure "Netscape" is not listed. If Netscape is running, select the Netscape item from the menu, go to the File menu, and select Quit. (command Q is the keyboard equivalent.)
        2. Once Netscape is closed, select the Finder item from the Applications menu.
        3. Find Netscape. Click it once. (Do not open the file; if you did, make sure to quit Netscape again before proceeding).
        4. Go to the File menu and select Get Info. There are two boxes here under Memory Requirements: Minimum size and a Preferred size. Do not change the Minimum size. Change the Preferred size box to anywhere between 16000 and 20000, depending on the amount of RAM you have available. This is a rough value that should give Netscape all of the elbow-room it needs. You can increase or decrease this value based on how much RAM is installed on the computer, whether you'll be running plugins or not, and whether some unused memory is needed for Helper Applications.

          Note: If the Preferred size is greater than the amount of free RAM, the max amount possible will be allocated. You'll get "Out of Memory" errors when you attempt to run helper apps. This is a non-fatal error, so there is no need to be too concerned if you see this.

        5. Turn off all software-based memory programs such as RamDoubler or OptiMem.

          You can do this by disabling the extensions for these programs within the Extension Manager.

        6. Optimize the Apple Disk Cache (in the Memory Control Panel)

          There is a Disk Cache setting inside the Memory Control Panel. It should be set to 32K per every 1 MB of physically installed RAM you have on your computer. For example, if you have 8MB of RAM, you'll set it to 256K, if you have 16MB of RAM, you'll set it to 512K, etc.

          Note: If you can't find the Memory Control Panel, it may be disabled. Turn it on using the Extensions Manager Control Panel and restart.

        7. Turn off the Modern Memory Manager (if present in the Memory Control Panel)

          This should help improve compatibility. Inside the Memory Control Panel there may be a heading called Modern Memory Manager. If present, click the Off button. (*NOTE-- If you are running system 7.5.5 or 7.6.x do NOT turn MMM off.)

        8. Upgrade MacTCP or Open Transport.

          Contact Apple for the latest versions of these products.

        9. Delete the Netscape Preferences.

          To do this within Netscape Navigator:

          1. Quit Netscape if it's running. Make sure it doesn't appear in the applications menu, the menu in the top-rightmost corner of the screen. If it is listed, select it, go to the File Menu and select Quit.
          2. Open the HD. Open the System Folder. Open the Preferences folder. Open the Netscape f folder.
          3. Drag the bookmarks.html, Address.html, the Mail folder and the Java folder to the desktop.
          4. Drag the Netscape f folder to the trash
          5. Go to the Special menu and select Empty Trash.
          6. Launch Netscape, which will rebuild the Netscape f preference folder.
          7. Drag the Mail and Java folders from the desktop back to the Netscape f folder
          8. After your problem is resolved, you can import your address book and bookmark files that you have saved back into the newly created Netscape f folder.

          To do this within Netscape Communicator:

          1. Open the hard disk, System folder, and then the Preferences folder.
          2. Locate the Netscape Users folder; it contains User Profiles and an item with (probably) your name on it.
          3. Double-click that icon.
          4. From the folder that opens, throw away Cache f and Global History
          5. Finally empty the trash.

        10. Rebuild the desktop

          Restart the Mac, hold down the option and command keys until the Mac asks "Do you want to rebuild the desktop?". Choose Yes.

          This may take up to 10 minutes.

        11. Run MacTools, Norton Disk Doctor, or Disk First Aid

          These first two are payware HD diagnostic programs. The third is a free disk diagnostic that comes with all Macs on either the Disk Tools floppy or the Apple System CD-ROM. Do not run these if you use any HD driver-level compression program such as TimesTwo or Stacker. If you don't know, then you probably don't have this type of program on your computer. Also, do not run these utilities if you use a Security program such as Empower or FolderBolt on your Mac.

        12. "Clean" Install the System Software

          A "Clean" install replaces all of the Apple components in the System Folder with new copies. A typical install doesn't do this. Call Apple for instructions.

        13. Some more helpful information on incompatible programs or program versions:

          Incompatible with FreePPP 1.0.5 and earlier:

          • RamDoubler 1.6.0 and earlier can get in the way of FreePPP and cripple the connection.
          • RamDoubler 1.6.1 is OK. Upgrade at http://www.connectix.com.

          Incompatible with Netscape:

      Problem:

      Macintosh version of Communicator freezes or quits with an error "Type 11".

      Solution:

      This can be caused by file corruption, extension conflicts or insufficient system resources. First of all, check that memory is configured correctly.

      1. Go to Control Panel and then Memory.
      2. Make sure that the Disk Cache is set to 32k for every megabyte of RAM installed, and that virtual memory is set to 1.5 to 2 times the RAM installed.
      3. Go to the Netscape Communicator Folder and click once on Netscape Communicator (do not open the folder).
      4. From the File menu, select Get Info, and in the window that opens, increase Preferred Size by 2-3000k.

      You may also need to let Communicator rebuild its Cache folder:

      1. Go to System Folder, Preferences, and Netscape Users.
      2. Open the folder with your name on it.
      3. Drag the Cache folder to the Trash to delete it.
      4. When you relaunch Communicator, it should rebuild the folder automatically.

      Further Troubleshooting

      If none of the above fixes the problems, there are still some steps we can take.

      1. Try installing a different version of Netscape. If you are running an older version of Netscape, you may want to try upgrading to Netscape Communicator. You can download Netscape Communicator for free from the sites listed below. Please make sure to install the most appropriate version for your system:
        - 68k (7.6.1 or higher, minimum 16 megs of ram)
        - PPC (7.6.1 or higher, minimum 16 megs of ram)
        Conversely, if you are on an older computer, and are trying to run Netscape Communicator, you may want to downgrade to netscape 3.04.
        - 68k
        - PPC

      2. Remove all of Netscape's plug-ins
        Netscape Navigator
        Go to Hard Drive -> System Folder -> Preferences->Netscape f -> Plug-Ins and remove all of them EXCEPT the Default Plug-In.
        Netscape Communicator
        Go to Hard Drive -> Netscape Communicator folder -> Plug-Ins and remove all the plug-ins Except the Default Plug-In
        This will shrink Netscape's operating size.
      3. Disable the Java and JavaScript Netscape Navigator
        With the program open, go to Options->Network Preferences, and click onto the Languages tab. Uncheck both Javascript and Java
        Netscape Communicator
        In Netscape, go to Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced. Uncheck Java and Javascript.
      Other Suggestions

      If you are only have sporadic errors, you may want to consider upgrading to the newest operating system your computer can support. While Type 11 and Type 1 errors can happen on any Macintosh at any time, Apple has made great improvement for memory handling in its newer operating systems, such as 8.1 and 8.5. This has cause a huge decrease in the frequency in these errors. For that reason, we strongly recommend upgrading to the newest operating system if your computer meets the minimum system requirements for the upgraded operating system. Consult your Apple Technician for help deciding if you should upgrade.

      In rare cases, we have also see where Netscape is just not compatible on some Macintosh systems. You may want to try running Microsoft's Internet Explorer and see if that runs without errors. You can download it from Microsoft's site.

      If these problems are constant and persist even after going through this troubleshooting guide, there could be a problem with the computer. In this case, you will need to have a computer technician look at your computer.
