There's nothing quite like the sounds of America's favorite pastime! Yes folks, midsummer is here! The 77th Annual MLB All-Star game takes place on Tuesday, July 11th at 8pm live on Fox!

For the fourth consecutive year, World Series home-field advantage will be dictated by the outcome of the game! The American League has dominated the series as of late, having secured World Series home-field advantage after winning each of the past 3 Fall Classics. Although controversial, as the American League has also captured the World Series the past two seasons after their All-Star game victory, the added reward to the winner makes for an always exciting and competitive game!

Goodbye Spam!

Above all, the most effective method to reduce and control spam is to utilize the CoreComm SpamCatcher. Each incoming message is examined by an advanced set of rules that determines whether or not the message is likely to be spam and then filters the message accordingly. Simply login to CoreComm Webmail at https://home.core.com/webmail, click on "Services" and activate the SpamCatcher.

Another effective method to control and reduce spam is to e-mail a complaint to the Internet Service Provider (ISP) from where the spam e-mail originated. The only reliable way to accurately determine where a particular e-mail originated is to examine the e-mail headers. In the following example, we will examine the e-mail headers from a spam message and use the information in the header to determine what ISP the e-mail came from and where to direct a complaint.

Obtain the header information from the spam e-mail

Please note that obtaining the header information will require you to open the e-mail. If there is a possibility that the message contains a virus, it would be best to simply delete the message to avoid further complications. Most e-mail clients will hide the header information by default. Please consult the help files of your e-mail client for information on how to retrieve header information.

E-Mail headers can be obtained within CoreComm Webmail by opening a message and clicking the "View Full Message Headers" link in the upper right corner of the open message.

The header of the e-mail will look something like this:

Examine the "Received:" lines of the header

The received lines contain information that can be used to determine where an e-mail came from, and more importantly, where to direct complaints about the e-mail. In the "Received:" lines, there will be IP addresses. We are specifically looking for the IP address in the last "Received:" line of the header. If the IP address in the last "Received:" line is not in square brackets (square brackets are "[" and "]"), or if there is not an IP address, then the e-mail header has most likely been forged, and our investigation is at an end. There are ways to decipher forged headers, but doing so is beyond the scope of this article.

However, in the example above, we see the IP in the last "Received:" line is 84.103.14.213 (highlighted in red). We can use the WHOIS tool found at: http://www.geektools.com/whois.php to give us some information about the administrators of the network that 84.103.14.213 is a part of. In this case, the contact information provided by WHOIS shows us the following:

We have now determined to send our complaint to "abuse@gaoland.net".

Sending the Complaint

If you chose to e-mail a complaint, it is very important to include a copy of the complete e-mail message (including the full headers.) Once a complaint has been sent, you may or may not receive an automated response indicating that your complaint has been received. However, once the appropriate abuse department has been notified, they should be able to take appropriate action to stop the spam.
